My first experience was Hoi An and that's not too bad, especially as there's a huge new road up the coast that nobody's using as yet (or they weren't last year and it was 2 years old then). All the businesses are along the old road further inland so it's still busier.

I know what you mean about the generosity, as evidenced in various blog posts. One that sticks in mind was when I was trying to get my laptop rucksack fixes as it was splitting away from the seams. Nobody on "Tailor Street" would take it as it was too thick a material.

A girl in the hostel took it home for her mum to do. Twice (a year apart). And also refused payment on her mother's behalf.

I didn't think it necessary to add:

- Don't fall off

As that seemed fairly obvious.

Hope the foot's OK soon.

May I add - if you have never biked before then perhaps Vietnam (esp Hanoi) isn't the place to test your skills.

Sure, these funny looking Vietnamese can you it and you're a man and therefore think you can ride like Steve McQueen.

Easy, right?

That was me today and I now have to apply iodine to my foot, toes & knee every 4-6 hours.

Remember how much iodine stings??

Fortunately the crash occurred outside the tailor shop of a former Vietnam Army doctor who was based in the south in the 60s.

He is officially the nicest man I have ever met and patched me up in no time, sending his son to the pharmacy and using his own concoction to sterilise the wound. He simply would not take payment, not even reimbursement for the antibiotics. "You friend. Friend for me is number one. Money, number twenty."

Great people.
